Splint for Fracture

Posted: 2020-10-30 14:10

A splint made of wood, bamboo, hard paper or plastic is fixed with a bandage or bandage on a fractured limb, so as to facilitate the healing of the broken end of the fracture under relatively static conditions, and at the same time, with gradual functional exercise, a treatment to promote fracture healing and restore limb function. Also known as clamping therapy.

The splint is required to have three properties: plasticity, fastness and elasticity. It has a variety of materials, such as bamboo, plastic, plywood and so on, among which air splint is also widely used. If it is used in the femur, it needs to be fixed with other splints. The size and length of the splint are divided into two types: non-articular splint and super-articular splint depending on the location of the fracture. The length of the non-exceeding joint splint shall not exceed the upper and lower joints of the fracture site, and the super joint splint shall be used near the joint or intro-articular fracture, exceeding the joint. The width of the splint can be divided into four roughly equal pieces or two wide and two narrow pieces according to the limb shape, and there is a gap of 0.5 cm between the splints when bandaging. Both ends and edges of the splint should be rounded and blunt. One side of a wooden, bamboo or plastic board is lined with felt and wrapped in a cotton sheath. Plywood plywood application should also be lined with cotton pad. The requirement of using air splint is relatively simple, and it will not cause secondary damage if it is used directly after pumping air, so it is a better choice. Choose different splints for different parts is necessary, such as neck injuries should use cervical collar. If chest and back injuries can choose kendrick extrication device. And for limbs, we could choose vacuum splints or leg traction splints or sam splints. The finger splints can be used for fingers.

When using the splint, adjust the tightness of the splint timely according to the swelling of the affected limb. In addition, often check and correct the dislocation in time, if there is a dislocation of the fracture, it is appropriate to remove the splint to restore and fix. The time of splint fixation should be after the fracture end reaches clinical healing. Three weeks after the fracture, the splint can be removed under traction and local massage can be carried out according to the specific conditions, and then fixed after moderate movement of the joint.
